Study Abroad – Australia Programs
There are many good reasons to study abroad. Australia is one place in particular that is very popular with American students.
For one thing, the U.S. and Australia have a great deal in common, language being only one of them. Like the North American colonies, Australia became a place where the British Empire in its heyday sent convicts (often for an offense as minor as stealing a loaf of bread). Early settlers of both countries found and engaged in conflicts with indigenous peoples already living there and discovered new unfamiliar fauna and flora ‘ and an untamed wilderness (in fact, much of the Australian outback is still untamed). Anyone who has visited or worked at a livestock ranch in the American West will find that it is done pretty much the same way in Australia. Australia’s folk music draws on many of the same Anglo-Celtic influences as American bluegrass and country-western genres.
There are also significant differences that you will discover when you study abroad. Australia’s people speak English, but the accent can be difficult for American ears to understand ‘ and the terminology and vernacular is very different. You’ll also have to get used to the seasons being the reverse of what you are used to. For example, whereas in North America, Christmas is a winter celebration and a time to cozy up to a fire, in Australia Christmas marks the beginning of summer; outdoor barbecues and swimming parties on the beach are common ways to celebrate the Yule holidays.
